By presenting the contemporary art brut, the gallery christian berst implies that it cannot be confined neither in a period of time […]

By presenting the contemporary art brut, the gallery christian berst implies that it cannot be confined neither in a period of time nor in a geographical perimeter not even in a formal spectrum. What is at stake here is rather the notion of individual mythology, dear to Harald Szeemann.

Since 2005, the gallery christian berst art brut – internationally recognized as a reference in its field – has been putting its passion at the service of creators off the beaten track, whether they are “classics” already consecrated by museums and collections or contemporary discoveries promised to the recognition of the art world.

The gallery distinguishes itself as much by its exhibitions, its participation in international art fairs as by its publications – more than 70 bilingual catalogues to date – or its conferences, screenings and other cultural events that tend to bring an ever wider public into the intricacies of Art Brut.

Several artists represented by the gallery have recently joined prestigious public collections (MNAM-Pompidou, MoMA, Metropolitan Art Museum, …) and about fifteen of them were included in the selection for the 2013 Venice Biennale, while Luboš Plný and Dan Miller, defended by the gallery for 10 years, were selected for the 2017 Venice Biennale.

In 2014 and 2015, Christian Berst was part of the critical college of the Salon d’art contemporain de Montrouge. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Comité professionnel des galeries d’art (CPGA) from 2013 to 2019 and secretary general of the Friends of the Bibliothèque nationale de France from 2014 to 2019.

In 2016, the gallery also became part of the collective MAP Metropolitan Art Paris, while Christian Berst curated two museum exhibitions: Art Brut: A Story Of Individual Mythologies, at the Oliva Creative Factory, Sao Joao de Madeira (Portugal) and Brut Now: Art Brut in the Age of New Technologies at the Belfort Museums (catalogue published by the Presses du Réel).

In October 2020, on the occasion of its 15th anniversary, the gallery opened a second space, The Bridge. This bridge between art brut and other categories of art allows guest curators, 7 times a year, to express their own vision of this fruitful dialogue.

In May 2022, Christian Berst will co-direct, with Raphaël Koenig, the Cerisy colloquium devoted to art brut.

Founded in 2007 in the 20th district of Paris before migrating to the Marais area in 2011, from the outset, Semiose established […]

Founded in 2007 in the 20th district of Paris before migrating to the Marais area in 2011, from the outset, Semiose established itself in the artistic landscape as a gallery, whose aesthetic values are rooted on the margins of art. Nourished by underground culture, the gallery is committed to forms and ideas born in the political, social and geographical fringes.

The practice of citation is a common reference point for the roster of artists represented by the gallery and raises complex issues related to the production and dissemination of images, the role and purpose of archives and visual culture in the broadest sense. Semiose champions an aesthetic based on questions of taste and consequently of cultural hierarchies. Techniques such as collage, appropriation and cultural subversion are shared by many of the artists, leading to a converging interest in referencing reality and the everyday world.

Younger artists are exhibited side by side with established names and figures of international renown. Over the years and through a patiently developed professional network, various institutions and public collections have forged strong links with artists promoted by the gallery. Semiose however, is committed to much more than simply representing artists: the gallery rigorously fulfills its role in the eco-system of art through its scientific and curatorial approach. It oversees the production of oeuvres and undertakes meticulous documentary and archival work around the artists it represents.

Semiose has also expanded its activities through a publishing house, Semiose éditions. Internationally available, more than a hundred titles have been published to date, including monographs, books by artists, written works and essays, an on-going magazine and a collection of coloring books.

For almost 30 years, Philippe Jousse has had a deep interest in the aesthetics of 20th century furniture, ceaselessly contributing to the recognition of designers and artists such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Mathieu Matégot, Le Corbusier… He has played an essential role in the development of French and foreign collectors’ tastes, by developing two parallel activities, in architect-designed furniture and in contemporary art. In 2001, Philippe Jousse separated his activities and opened a gallery dedicated to promoting contemporary art. The artistic line adopted aims to support emerging artists at the same time as renowned figures. The artists represented by the Jousse Entreprise gallery are mostly French, and enjoy an international standing.

Founded in 2008 in Paris by Alberta Pane and specialized in contemporary art, the gallery supports international artists, promoting the conceptual force of their projects. The gallery also encourages artists’ experimentation in space and urges them to work in balance with their environment. The interpretation and analysis of our time is the main purpose of their reflection.
With several exhibitions per year and international art fairs, the gallery has realized important projects in collaboration with museums, cultural institutions and international galleries.

In May 2017 the gallery opened its second venue in Venice, a former carpenter’s shop of 350m², transformed into an evocative exhibition space. In the same year, the gallery undertook an editorial venture: Edizioni Alberta Pane. This new series of publications reinforces the role of the gallery as promoter of the artistic activity, fostering the public fruition, and the relationship of the artists with institutions, collectors and editorial production.

Artists: Gayle Chong Kwan, Marie Denis, Romina De Novellis, Igor Eškinja, Christian Fogarolli, Luciana Lamothe, Marie Lelouche, Marcos Lutyens, Ivan Moudov, Fritz Panzer, Michelangelo Penso, Michele Spanghero, Esther Stocker, João Vilhena

Georges-Philippe and Nathalie Vallois Gallery opened its doors in 1990 at the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The Contemporary Art/Nouveau Réalisme duality has always been one of the main characteristics of the gallery. The idea that a galerist can do the same work for a young emerging artist as for an accomplished one has always been central in our approach. Since our opening, we have exhibited the following artists : Boris Achour, Pilar Albarracin, Gilles Barbier, Julien Berthier, Julien Bismuth, Mike Bouchet, Alain Bublex, Massimo Furlan, Taro Izumi, Richard Jackson, Adam Janes, Jean-Yves Jouannais, Martin Kersels,Paul Mc Carthy, Jeff Mills, Joachim Mogarra, Arnold Odermatt,Henrique Oliveira, Pierre Seinturier, Keith Tyson, Jacques Villeglé, Olav Westphalen, Winshluss, Virginie Yassef. This approach is still ours today with exhibitions of the estates of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, as well as a personal exhibition dedicated to younger artists, such as Henrique Olivieira, a young Brasilian artist who created a buzz at the last Sao Paulo Biennale
