Nos Natures, an exhibition by French artist Marie Denis, with a film realized in collaboration with artist and filmmaker Vladimir Vatsev.
Conceived as an « ethnography of nature » in two chapters, this exhibition features both prints, sculptures, and installations by Marie Denis and a film by Vladimir Vatsev, resulting from a close
cooperation between the artist and the filmmaker. Although generally described as sculptural, Marie Denis’s work takes on a wide variety of forms, with botanical principles as the common thread. Her work reinvents the forms of nature, blending plant specimens and objects transformed by experimentation with materials, and cross-fertilizing artisan skills imbued with
ecological awareness.
For this exhibition, the artist invites us to plunge into her univer se, thr ough her latest explorations of materials, as well as older landmark works that have been redesigned for
the occasion.
The film presented in the second space of the gallery, directed by Vladimir Vatsev, takes us into a dark, hypnotic universe. Here we find the artist’s Masques, worn by silhouettes dressed
in black, crossing and stretching time, whether in forests, industrial or Gallo-Roman sites, and even the famous Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval.
Created in 2010 during workshops at the École des métiers du Lot in Cahors, the Masques series has since been reinvented on several of
occasions. Hybrid and polymorphic, the Masques take the form of moving sculptures, made from plants and various recycled materials

Alberta Pane Gallery is pleased to present the sixth solo exhibition by Marie Denis in its Paris venue.

Marie Denis has always worked on metamorphoses. Those that the time and her taste for paradox impart to materials, those that the artist brings to plants, since nature is at the center of her work. She explores different techniques to fix the images of an ephemeral world on more or less conventional supports.

For this exhibition, the artist invites us to dive into her plant universe using the technique of printmaking in an « unorthodox » way. She also presents a series of « masks » resulting from the sensations experienced during the confinement.

A beautiful and faithful collaboration between the very fine work of artist Marie Denis and the very talented gallery owner Alberta Pane […]

A beautiful and faithful collaboration between the very fine work of artist Marie Denis and the very talented gallery owner Alberta Pane must be highlighted here.

For her fifth solo show at the gallery, the artist will entirely invest the gallery’s space by creating, with her new work on pap er, a very personal enchanting universe inspired by the plant world.

Marie Denis has always worked on metamorphoses, those that time or her taste for paradox imprint on materials; those that the artist gives to plants, since Nature is her

favorite field.

In Nature des Profondeurs the artist presents works based on her « historical » approach, the interpretation of the plant world, coupled with a daily process: photocopying.

After having reused silver photomaton , patina or fax, Marie Denis sublimates here the prosaic nature of the ultimate office machine, the Sharp MXM316N photo

copier from the école d’art de Fresnes where she has been in residence since the beginning of 2018. The exploitation of all possible diversions that she can operate with the fixed sc

an of the machine, transforms the latter into a photographic camera that switches these prints into timeless snapshots.

Marie Denis, L’oeuf-gigogne, 2011, acacia, lime tree, and walnut For « Lucy », her third solo show at Alberta Pane Gallery, Marie Denis has chosen to present new large format sculptures. But who is Lucy? Our ancestor, of course, that Australopithecus afarensis, the first woman, the first lady… On this occasion the gallery will turn into a place of birth, of origins, of a beginning. It is also a metaphor for an impossible acquaintance, for the difficulty – impossibility even? – to transfer any knowledge of reality. A reality transformed into knowledge, on which Marie Denis has focused before in some sort of curiosity chambers – exhibition designs that could so suitably be described by the term « Wunderkammer », i.e. « Chamber of Wonders ».

Contrary to the exuberance of these previous exhibitions, the gallery now presents a return to « primary », or « primal », pieces, touching the origin of things, of life. The sculptures of Marie Denis lead us to the very soul of objects (for Marie Denis, every object has a soul) that is disclosed by her creations’ sheer force.

L’oeuf gigogne* (The Nesting Egg) in its exaggerated dimensions is made from acacia, lime tree and walnut; it appears as a symbol of birth and every source of life, but also as a pure sculpture of exceptional beauty. Le cheval (The Horse) is an animist piece that wakes our forgotten primal instincts. Les cigarettes russes (The Russian Cigarettes) is the output of a botanist’s work, materialising and reifying plants. Nue, (La grappe de raisin*) empty without any grapes, is a biomorphic sculpture that evokes an ancient and primitive way of life. Marie Denis holds a peculiar interest in the vegetal and mineral world; she has a great sense of materiality and of the materiel to which she introduces a second meaning, a new life

Founded in 2008 in Paris by Alberta Pane and specialized in contemporary art, the gallery supports international artists, promoting the conceptual force of their projects. The gallery also encourages artists’ experimentation in space and urges them to work in balance with their environment. The interpretation and analysis of our time is the main purpose of their reflection.
With several exhibitions per year and international art fairs, the gallery has realized important projects in collaboration with museums, cultural institutions and international galleries.

In May 2017 the gallery opened its second venue in Venice, a former carpenter’s shop of 350m², transformed into an evocative exhibition space. In the same year, the gallery undertook an editorial venture: Edizioni Alberta Pane. This new series of publications reinforces the role of the gallery as promoter of the artistic activity, fostering the public fruition, and the relationship of the artists with institutions, collectors and editorial production.
