Hervé Heuzé          Mythologies – Works On Paper

Jean-Luc and Takako Richard are pleased to present  Hervé Heuzé’s eight solo show at Galerie Richard tilted Mythologies – Works On Paper from December 10th, 2016 to February 25th, 2017. During the same period, from December 4th 2016 to January 29th, 2017 Galerie Richard New York presents the Mythologies paintings series, his first solo show in New York City.

The considerable advances in medical science, whether genetic or surgical, open the imagination to all kinds of combinations of hybrid beings, half human – half animal. As an artist-painter, it brought him back to the representations of divinities in mythologies, especially those of Greek and Roman, Nordic, Hindu and Aztec.

When the animal was not visually fitting to be hybridized with the human, he represented it in an another relationship with the mankind inspired by literature (The Master and Margarita by Mikhaïl Boulgakov), and movies (King Kong). The Parisian gallery shows us his new series of works on paper related to his previous painting show Mythologies in 2015 which also new drawings inspired by the mythologies but detached form the hybridized beings.

Hervé Heuzé decided to be an artist first because he liked expressing himself by drawings. He has been impressed by the precision and constraint in the drawings by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780 – 1867). He uses graphite pencils, graphite powder and colored pencils.

The exhibited drawings are sometimes preparatory works for the paintings. Others are variations after the paintings, which at the present time only exist as works on paper. Some drawings introduce new subjects, such as the fairies and have not be translated in any painting yet. For example one drawing represents Epiméthée surrounding by animals which will probably be represented in a painting next year.

Hervé Heuzé’s works bring together a contemporary vision of our world and a marvelous technical skill which allow his works to be included in both contemporary art and old masters collections.
