COUTURIER - POLARIS

COUTURIER – POLARIS

Galerie Polaris
15 rue des Arquebusiers – 75003 Paris
October 15 - November 19 2011

Stéphane Couturier’s new exhibition at the galerie Polaris in Paris will take place this fall; the last one — Chandigarh Replay — was in 2007.
With the series « Melting Point Brasilia » Stéphane Couturier invites us to a new approach of Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture.
Rather than giving priority to a single point of view, he superimposes two shots. This duality generates new questioning and a new way to confront the reality pictured.
Like for Chandigarh, we all have a preconceived idea of the city of Brasilia and with this choice of photographs our sight is blurred. Giving up the documentary aspect, he shapes a plastic artwork.
The new architectural and visual « creation » that we see puts in question the duality between the viewer and what he sees.
Jean-Luc Godard wrote: « All these stories, how can we tell them? Maybe by showing them. »
By renewing his lexicon with each series, Stéphane Couturier conveys his own vision of the world. This vision is by no means an assertion; the purpose is to puzzle the viewer’s point of view and to offer him a few leads that will help him to decipher Couturier’s world (that was previously described as urban archaeology).
Mathieu Poirier wrote in 2004 about the artist: « each plan is stated as a decor which, just as in the theatre, stacks over another one, supports it or contradicts it », here, in the series Melting Point Brasilia, the decors mingle and create a new fragmentary and experimental environment.
