How to show the inside ? exactly by remaining wisely outside – Jean-Luc Godard
Trained in the architecture before affecting a career of plastic artist, Vanessa Fanuele, for her first exhibition at Galerie Polaris, presents a set of new paintings, of sculptures – objects and works on paper. The exhibition underlines the artist’s interest for the fantasized worlds. Mixing painted landscapes and architectures-objets, treating architecture as a landscape and the landscape as a construction, Vanessa Fanuele creates a new space, of indiscernability between reality and imaginary.

If Le songe de Poliphile of Francesco Colonna or Les villes invisibles of Italo Calvino may be sources, it is exaclty what the artist finds in the materials which punctuate her universe : dreams, landscapes, architectures, the appearance of the figure and its erasure. The artworks, by their treatments and their references, evoke the ambivalence of the memory and the powerful character of the nature.
By looking at the succession of paintings and sculptures, we cannot seize the temporality. This doubt is also strengthened with the subtlety by the treatment of the paint, which operates a confusion. Vanessa Fanuele treats colors as symptoms.

The painting Perdus, pourtant introduces the exhibition through a big landscape in the blinding lights, vibrating on an incandescent bottom whose the rhythm almost remain the nature abstracted.
We can discern in the overlappings of layers or strips of colors, most of the time without detailed outline, and in the « shameless » tones, the movement of a painter who looks for her questions in the act to paint rather than in the graphic shape, deceiving illusions of volumes and depths. It is well these assemblies of colors that define here the landscape to better undo it. In the density of the present vegetation in paintings, come to oppose sculptures in plaster to the forms evoking the Duck architectures of the 30s.
These architectures – images souvenir – don’t mark the past, but rather an old present, and suggest that the artist considers the time as a space to explore. Vanessa Fanuele roams in the corridors of time to better reach the exit.
